Missions
We are committed to missions and take seriously the command of Jesus to "Go and make disciples of all nations". In the past year, our mission activities have taken members of this church to Honduras, Morocco, Peru, England, to the Gulf Coast for hurricane rebuilding efforts, along the Mississippi River for flood relief efforts, to parts of Illinois for ice storm cleanup, and to the poorest county in Alabama, Perry County, to lead Vacation Bible School programs throughout the summer.
We also support local missions with monthly giving of time, goods and financial support to Helping Hands, a local food pantry here in Mahomet. We support the Times Center homeless shelter/soup kitchen in Champaign. We contribute to the Mahomet transient assistance fund.
We have chosen to reach out by holding our Vacation Bible School program, not at the church building, but at an offsite location to better reach the unchurched children of our community.
We also take part in the local Sangamon River Music Festival, a secular event that we use to reach unchurched people through a booth and other activities.
We provide financial support to a number of local and global missions. In addition, we provide direct financial support to missionaries in Thailand and Costa Rica.
Our focus is on reaching as many people as possible for Jesus in as many ways as God allows.
New Commandment Men's Ministries
A group of men at First Baptist have started a New Commandment Ministries group. New Commandment Ministries meets the second Saturday of the month at 8:30 am at First Baptist Church before heading out to help others in need. Their latest project was building a ramp for a woman in Mahomet who is in a wheel chair. Prior to the ramp, she was unable to leave her home without assistance.
From the Missions Field to the Peace Corp
A member of First Baptist and a dear sister in Christ, Tanya Riddle, has always had a heart for Missions. She has traveled to many regions in the US and overseas and has brought the love of Christ to so many people. And now Tanya is serving in the Peace Corp at the village of Chigubo in Gaza Province, Mozambique. She is working with OCSIDA, an organization which works in the areas of care and support for people with HIV/AIDS, mother to child HIV transmission prevention, and care and support for OVCs (orphans and vulnerable children). You can follow Tanya on her blog, Before Sunset.
